VIE Germany 2012 Grand Prize
12 July 2012
On June 15, Pauline Grangeat, currently on a Volunteer for International Experience (VIE) assignment at Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland, received the VIE Germany 2012 Grand Prize awarded by Ubifrance. An opportunity for her to review her experience thus far.
“After graduating with a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from Sciences Po Paris in France, I wanted to begin my career abroad, as part of a large French corporation. I knew that with Saint-Gobain I would get the support I needed throughout my assignment, and be able to work on key projects as part of a team.
I am currently halfway through a 24-month VIE assignment in the communications department. No two days are alike. My assignment is very broad: develop a culture shared by the 19 Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland brands and boost the sense of employee belonging in the company and their activity. I began by travelling around Germany, from outlet to outlet, learning how the company operates. I then launched a series of initiatives in line with my assignment: reviving the in-house newsletter, launching a new intranet, a communication campaign focusing on our benchmark projects, and interactive hub, etc. The variety of these initiatives means that I get to work with lots of different people from human resources and marketing, and even with colleagues in the outlets.
Being French abroad has enabled me to cast a fresh eye over the situation. It has also helped me understand Saint-Gobain’s strategy and pass it on. Travelling abroad also brought the challenge of a new environment, and I have learnt a lot about myself from that. An excellent experience all around!”
